Do you hate the word “cancer” as much as I do?
I just got news about two friends with cancer. One with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and one with Lung Cancer. Can I just say…I hate cancer?
I am a stage 3 Cancer survivor, so I know what these friends have ahead of them. I hate what it does to your body…breaking it down to nothing. I hate what it does to your family….all the worry. I hate what it does to your kids…the tears, the fear, the look in their eyes. I hate what it does to your body long term, if you get that opportunity.
I am not a big cryer but when I heard about my friend with Lung cancer, I just about lost it. I know what lies ahead. So many doctor appointments, overwhelming new information that is hard to digest, countless decisions to make, unpleasant surprises, and seemingly endless scary unknowns.
Your world just stops. That’s right. Stops. And your “to do” list radically changes.
And then there is your spouse. In our case, Scott, went into “go mode”. I could just see the worry and the “take action” mode he entered. I couldn’t digest the doctors’ suggestions, so he had to step up and do it for me. I couldn’t handle the bills that were coming in, so he had to take care of it for me. I couldn’t handle most everything, so he stepped up. In the meantime, he was freaking out. I could see it in his eyes.
You never know when a major “shocker” is going to come smack dab in the middle of your family. So here is my encouragement today. Do everything you can to make your relationship great. Would you let go of past hurts? Stop holding grudges against your spouse? Stop the money fights? Learn how to get on the same page about everything. Stop bickering, stop fighting, and be the first person in your relationship to “make the move”. Make the move of being kinder and gentler. Listen more and talk less.
Thank you for letting me stomp my feet a bit. I hate cancer and have been reminded that life changing news can happen at any point. Let’s all love, actively connect with, and be more kind to our spouses this year. I know Scott and I are going to do everything we can to give you great tools to make your relationship great. After all…what’s your relationship worth?
Let me know below if you can relate. I would love to hear your story in the comments below.
