Everyone loves their little luxuries; usually, these just have a way of making your home better to live in. Besides, it’s those little teeny tiny indulgences that just make life so much better too. For example, it’s something like cranking the AC when it is barely warm (just in case it gets a little hotter in the day), and honestly, there’s more than enough other examples that are about to be covered. But those little luxury habits shouldn’t be a problem, though, right? Like, aren’t they harmless?
Well, when the bill comes in and it is basically shouting at you. It’s reminding you of all those little indulgences and how, well, they’re not free at all. Yeah, everyone is guilty of these, even when they haven’t turned into full-blown habits yet. But yeah, it turns out comfort is far from cheap, and your habits are grassing you up line by line on that statement.
Does the AC that Never Quit?
So, this example was just above, and yeah, it’s one that definitely deserves to be the first mentioned because of how common it is. So, air conditioning is like that friend who is amazing to hang out with but leaves you broke every time. Okay, so hopefully you don’t have any friends like that, but you get the idea. Sure, it feels great when the house is icy cold, but running it constantly is like setting money on fire. Actually, the same goes for winter, and having the heating on constantly (even when it’s barely chilly outside).
Just try turning it down a notch or two and maybe even open a window once in a while. The same for when it’s a tad cold, leave the curtains open for the sun to shine in, wear a sweater, and have a blanket over you. Go ahead and do little things like this; it does save some money, and it’s not like you’ll be physically uncomfortable either.
Are Your Showers Doubling as Spa Days?
Sure, everyone’s been there, just standing under the hot water like it is washing away every bad decision made that week. Yeah, by all means, it’s such a lovely feeling, but it’s not cheap, though. Those long showers are basically liquid gold pouring down the drain. It’s best to just knock a few minutes off, and you are still squeaky clean, just not broke in the process.
What About Your Kitchen?
Honestly, the kitchen is full of silent energy traps. That fridge, for example? Well, it never stops working, so the more efficient it is, the better. Well, it’s not like you can or should unplug it, of course. But it’s best to just pay attention to fridge wattage since that alone is a good reminder that this one appliance is quietly shaping your bill month after month. Okay, sure, you can’t do much if the fridge is high energy, except wait for it to break and then hopefully have enough for a new one. But it still helps to have an idea.
Oh, and add in blasting the oven for a single slice of pizza or running the dishwasher when it is only half full, and basically, the kitchen is the most expensive room in the house.
Don’t Forget About Phantom Energy
Just think about it for a moment; chargers, TVs, gaming consoles, well, all of them are power-hungry freeloaders. They sip energy the entire time they are plugged in, even when they look “off.” Phantom energy is a thing that you need to keep in mind, so unplug things where you can.
